Die Großmutter nimmt Zuflucht zu einer Legende: Die Ratte wünschte sich vom Schöpfer die Gabe des Lachens. Er gab nach, unter einer Bedingung: Wenn die Ratte eines Tages unter der Erde ein anderes Wesen lachen hört, dann wird auch sie lachen können.
Hundert Jahre später versucht eine Anthropologin, den Ursprung des Mythos vom Mädchen mit der Ratte zu ergründen. Dieser Mythos, der in vielerlei Formen überliefert ist, z.B. in Internet-Gedichten oder Comics , lässt die Forscherin nicht los. Schritt für Schritt deckt sie seine Entstehung auf: Im zweiten Weltkrieg versteckten polnische Bauern gegen Geld ein jüdisches Mädchen. Sie sperrten es in ein Erdloch, wo sein einziger Gefährte eine Ratte warfare, mit der es sich anfreundete. Ein Priester nahm sich schließlich des Mädchens an und übergab es bei Kriegsende einer zionistischen business enterprise.
»Und die Ratte lacht« ist ein bestürzendes, kühnes Werk, das sprachlich und inhaltlich neue Wege geht. Die hebräische Originalausgabe erschien 2001 und battle ein großer Erfolg. Die gleichnamige Kammeroper, komponiert von Ella Milch-Sheriff und mit dem Libretto von Nava Semel, hatte 2005 in Tel Aviv Premiere.
